You Can't Make It Up
Our feature tune... Belongs to a delightful new young talent from NYC by way of France. Clara Bellino and "Peaceful Solution" will capture your heart. Let's hope her message catches on. Like all the music we play you can hear this one on the Podsafe Music Network.

Voices to Hear

SIMPLY SIX: Clara Bellino

Clara Bellino is a singer/songwriter from California.

1. For many artists, they cite a
defining moment for themselves when they knew they wanted to be a singer. For many it was the appearance of Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show, to another generation it was the Beatles’ appearance on Sullivan half a decade later. Is there such a defining moment for you?

It was putting myself to sleep when I was 9 listening to David Bowie, I loved his lyrics, metaphors, imagery and personal expression. I was writing poems, decided I was going to sing them, put them to music. I had just started playing piano.

2. When you’re not creating music what are you listening to? Who are some of your favorites?

I listen to a wide array of music: what I catch on radio, in my car, I love Spanish, sung, and Brazilian grooves of all kinds. But also classical, big band, japanese pop, instrumentals. Music that has something to say and does it in an entertaining personal non preachy way that involves me and talks to me not at me.

3. What would you say is your greatest moment so far as an artist, either on record or live?

There have been a few. Most recently it was doing an internet radio interview with someone in Indiana knowing that 400 kids in 2 orphanages in Kenya and India were listening in to my song we picked for them "Goodnight Baby", and it lifted them up. I was choked up listening, and when I found
out it cheered them up. Playing the Olympics in my hometown in 1992! was pretty special too.

 4. Do you believe music can change the world or is just something to listen to? How much can music influence current events?

Music does change the world, imagine the world without it?

Influence current events? sure if we all sing together..

 5. How has technology affected the music industry? How has technology affected your career as a musician?

Technology I suppose has benefited and hindered music as I see it; technology gives me more control over being exposed around the world and gives me the ability to connect with the people who enjoy what I do. Musically speaking, I still prefer the sound of real instruments played by people playing together who know how to play them.

6. Now for my Barbara Walters question: If you were a pair of shoes what type of shoes would you be?

A fuzzy pair of warm slippers :)

The Examiner
Strange Halloween Bay adventure October 29, 2:14 AMBay Area Public Transportation ExaminerGuy Span Previous Next Comment Print Email RSS Subscribe Bay Bridge views from the ferry. Photo by the author. Looking for the quintessential quirky San Francisco adventure? Try the Alameda Oakland ferry’s run from the City back to the East Bay, passing under the ruins of the Bay Bridge along the way. Clara Bellino and a few friends will be performing live Saturday, October 31st on a San Francisco ferry, leaving from the Ferry Building (2:25 PM) Fishermans Wharf – Pier 41 (2:50 PM) and stopping at Angel Island, Alameda and Oakland before returning to San Francisco. This fantastic tour of the Bay is to celebrate the 2nd to last run of the Angel Island ferry for the summer season. This is the only ferry run that tours Sausalito, Angel Island, Treasure Island, Yerba Buena, the Bay Bridge and the Oakland Estuary all as part of its normal weekend schedule. But there’s nothing “normal” about this run, as passengers will hear Clara Bellino perform, while witnessing wonderful Bay Views on this extended schedule. Beverages and snacks are sold on board as are ferry tickets. There is no extra charge for the performance and all are welcome. Clara’s reviews have been interesting, with Lyrical Venus noting "Awesome, Bright, Bubbly, … Quirky, Fun, Whimsical." (Sep 2, 2009). Or “The more I listen to this CD, the more I like it, and that’s all I need to know”. Review by Gita Tewari the Feminist Review (Oct 1, 2009). Clara has played at Café du Nord, benefit concerts on the East Coast, the European Continent and local Bay Area venues. This is a chance to celebrate Halloween early with extraordinary music while still having plenty of time left for other activities. Visitors can join at Alameda, Oakland or San Francisco and disembark in the early afternoon. Sample songs can be found on her web site at: http://www.clarabellino.com/

The People's Showcase
Clara Bellino Website: http://www.clarabellino.com/ Press:"Bellino's sweetness evokes a younger Faithfull,a playfulness Deborah Harry had with Blondie, and even an existential touch of the Velvet Underground's Nico, before the German songstress sank forever beneath the waves of Stygian gloom." Bruce Bellingham, Arts and Entertainment/ San Francisco Northside Hailing from Paris, France, and growing up in a small village of the French Alps, Clara Bellino blends heartfelt rhythms, magical lyrics, and unimaginable emotions into a rare mixture of solid American songs with an unfettered sense of humor and a European sense of what is amusing. Americans probably remain puzzled by her songs in French, but are still moved by the rhythms and the performance. Her English songs are instantly understandable and the range between Europop and American Music is beguiling. All you have to do is listen to “Potential Criminal” or “Goodnight Baby” and you won’t get these beautifully produced songs out of your head. There is no single word that describes her songs. It’s a mixture of thoroughly requited love and, at odd times, real aggression, but with a sense of humor that never fades. Critic Bruce Bellingham compares her work to that of Faithful, Blondie’s Debby Harry and Nico before her involvement with The Velvet Underground.

Butterfly Gardeners Association
I am a member of Musicians and Fine Artists for World Peace. And I owe it to Alan Moore founder of the Butterfly Gardeners Association. Alan is giving voices to the wish and need for world peace. Check out the site, you might feel hopeful! An excerpt: Invite to a Musical Peace Movement Born on the Wings of Butterflies "By the time we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong and everywhere was song and celebration. And I dreamed I saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky, turning into butterflies above our nation." When Joni Mitchell wrote the lyrics to her Woodstock, it was more than inspirational, it was truly prophetic. What we called 'flower power' then is evolving into 'butterfly power' now and being embraced by more people than ebraced the peace and love generation generation of the 60's. In 1993 National Geographic proclaimed that a butterfly can, with a flap of its wings, change the world and that the ripple it sends out can spawn a hurricane. In another issue that same year Geographic stated, "...Beauty seems to be an intrinsic part of nature, and perhaps even the organizing principle of reality. Scientists, in testing their theories, invariably find that the simplest, most elegant, most beautiful equation, is the correct one. Rainbows, butterflies, and the periodic table are some examples of intrinsic beauty. The world will be saved by beauty." The butterfly initiative intends to do just that by becoming a catalyst for helping to cocreate a culture of world peace and global harmony. The butterfly could be the key to what we call the "paradigm shift." Our butterfly Earth Proclamation was endorsed by James Redfield and Dr. Paul Ray, coauthor of the book on Cultural Creatives. The Butterfly Network is a group of individuals and organizations trying to build a worldwide network for global change. We intend to do this by developing and promoting events and programs that will inspire citizens on a worldwide basis. This coalition of organizations is in the process of coming together & getting a structure in place. We are inviting you to discover how this project may be just what you have been seeking for a long time. We are collaborating with a consortium of groups and individuals to open up centers for peace, justice, and global healing all over the world, starting right here in the San Francisco Bay area. It will collectively house the Butterfly Gardeners Association, Performing and Fine Artists for World Peace, Project Chrysalis, Authors for a Positive Millennium, a branch of the International Association of Educators for World Peace, the Woodstock Nation Foundation, a nonviolence program for youth, a crisis program for women, a grief counseling program, a children's reading, gardening and environmental education program, and an indigenous support outreach among other things.

Ed's Mixed Bag
All genres of podsafe music, a "Know Your Podcaster's Voice" contest with prizes, Ed's Software Tip sometimes featured, family musician's music. I began the Ed's Mixed Bag podcast on Oct. 6, 2005. By that time I had already been bored to death by terrestial radio except for one program produced by NPR radio called, "This American Life." The in-depth and real audio heard in these productions was unlike anything else on the airwaves and served as my inspiration that an radio production could be worth listening to! In addition, I had always, from my youth, messed around with analog music mixes on reel to reel tape machines and later on with cassette tapes. In the late summer of 2005, podcasting came to my attention, and as they say, the rest is history. Thanks Ed for closing episode 179 with Goodnight Baby!
